Sorry to spam this section of the Sim Connection but, I'm very passionate about video games in general and even more so to the ones I like or adore. I'm sure we all have developers we follow or if not one singular person studios. In the way that wrestling is widely followed based on preference, I feel video games are one in the same. In the same way as somebody would follow New Japan Pro Wrestling primarily I follow Square Enix as they put out a lot of things that I like and have played many times over. However, in the way that somebody would like a match or event from another company is my conflict when I tell people that Square Enix is my favorite developer, but Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time. It's something about the game is played, my obsession over figuring out what the hell happened in it, my unusual liking of Ludwig, the history of it, etc. It's all a storm mixed into one. However let's start this without further ado.
THIS IS NOT ME TRYING TO CONVINCE YOU WHY THIS IS THE BEST GAME! THIS IS ME EXPLAINING WHY IT'S MY FAVORITE GAME! ALL REVIEWS I MAY OR MAY NOT DO ARE SUBJECTIVE!
For those who've never played anything outside of GTA and Wrestling video games, you've still probably heard of Dark Souls. You've probably heard of it to be extraordinarily hard due to clear misdirection and enemy levels. However one game that may have been swept under the rug is Bloodborne by the huge Dark Souls crowd. While it is respected, I feel like it's so much more than Dark Souls. Now I will openly tell you I've played Bloodborne to completion around 10-15 times and then it'll become obvious why. However I want to explain to you guys and gals why I am so attached to Bloodborne rather than the saving grace of From Software Dark Souls.
Aesthetic
Right from the menu you know this game is dark, both visually and theoretically the ideas discussed are nothing to scoff at. However one thing I unconditionally adore is the Gothic look, tall people with lanky limbs and non-proportioned bodies. The entire look was based off of Bram Stoker's: Dracula, the Victorian character designs to the tips of all the buildings and cathedrals that seem to pierce the ever-changing sky. Not to mention the forests that seem to be more open than the cities but somehow still feeling suffocating and horrific with even more beasts laying around at every nook and cranny to kill you on your journey to transcend the hunt. Byrgenworth is a gorgeous for its size, it's an old forgotten college in the middle of a Forbidden Woods. The Nightmare areas are horrific and feature unusual beasts such as Giant Spiders, more terrifying versions of the werewolves from Yharnam.
Gameplay
The gameplay is nothing super innovative, but it's still fun and easy to pick up and play which is a main idea of this game and any From Software game. Just play till you're done, whether that includes beating the game twice in one run or just playing the first area, play a game and learn whilst also having fun. Whether the fun comes from mastery or tension is up to personal preference however for me is a bit of both, also the exploration and discovery within the game is everywhere. Take the Cainhurst quest line for example, you begin it in the Cathedral Ward when you meet Alfred, the Vileblood Hunter (A.K.A The Second best NPC evar!!!) he's a friendly guy and explains to you about certain topics that pique your interest; as long as you agree to cooperate. He'll tell you after you've beaten Vicar Amelia about the Corrupted Vilebloods, then in a side area of the Forbidden Woods that branches into Iosefka's Clinic you get an item called the Cainhurst summons. You go to a broken down tower in Hemwick Charnel Lane to be treated a seat in a horse carriage headed to the Forsaken Castle Cainhurst! That involves four areas, you don't simply show up in one part of the map and say "wonder what stupid quest lines are around here" while rolling your eyes, it's a three area wide hunt for all the items to go to the fourth secret area. Isn't that exciting?! Doesn't that fill you with any sense of achievement?! It's awesome to see this in modern games, I feel secret areas and such that came with PS1 games I loved when I was younger, it was the sense of wonder. Wide-eyed wondering "Hmm, if I do this like this I can get there and who knows what else is beyond there." It's a break from the path of completion. This perfectly transitions into the sub-category here Boss fights.
Boss Fights
There's many boss fights in Bloodborne and all have stories....well most do, some are just there and that's a-okay. Have you ever seen something so interesting you almost didn't want to figure it out? Just because when the mystery is solved the magic disappears? Well I have and that is all the unsolved boss origins in this game. However inside the gameplay of the bosses there are usually 2-3 phases. Bosses will start confident in their ability to dispose of you, however when you show off your ability and how skilled you actually are they get serious usually a scream signifies this or a transition of fighting style. Or for one literally losing their lower body equals the second phase. Then the third is for some only when they get really serious and start busting out high damage moves, some are even instakills. They will consist of humans or humanoid hunters like Maria of the Astral Clocktower and alot of others or they will be beasts like the Blood-Starved Beast or Ludwig, the Accursed.
Soundtrack
Now, I'm not going to fake 4 years in the study of music, but I will say that this games soundtrack is awesome. From the haunting menu music all the way to serene music of the Hunter's Dream. However there is one track in this entire game I love to death, it's the Ludwig boss fight music. From Accursed to The Holy Sword, it's a beautiful score change to something sad and somber more than likely related to looking at the monstrosity he's become then halfway through the fight a heart-warming cutscene happens and then it shifts into battle music. Music befitting of holy raids, as if to remember the sound of the panic in the streets while he was out on his raids in Yharnam for the Healing Church. A close second is Logarious' theme, it's so perfect for his fight and I can't explain it. All of it is orchestral and beautiful in its own way, it goes well with the gross and disgusting dingy bosses and the horrifying tales they have to accompany them. I have nothing less to say about this, if you respect orchestral music do nothing less than buy this soundtrack.
Story and Lore
Strap in everybody this is a long one. Also, this is what I've gathered from videos online and reading up on item descriptions and also some is my personal input. Here we go! Alright, so this story starts when deep within the Pthumerian tombs a holy medium is found and referred to as the Eldrich Truth. Then out of curiosity a man known as Willem begins to think of ways to elevate his thoughts to a higher plane thus he establishes the the Byrgenworth Scholars to gain subjects to gather the things he needs for his experiments. His main goal is to line his brain with eyes to achieve his goal, however one of his subjects Laurence begins to hear about the establishment of Blood healing and Old Blood. Old blood is a remedy that cures any ailment, this is especially useful due to the recent outbreak of the Beastly Scourge caused by the Ashen Blood. However, there was another thing that was striking to Provost Willem the discovery of the Great Ones. Willem wanted to achieve contact with the Great Ones to elevate his thoughts through insight however he didn't approve of the Old Blood use as it was too good to be true and it should be feared. This split Laurence and Willem, though Laurence did not forget his time in the Byrgenworth Scholars he founds the Healing Church. He takes the Healing Church and founds it around the use of Blood Healing to obtain power in Yharnam. However, the Old Blood also was tainted with traces of the beastly scourge. Everything seems to be crashing down around the Healing Church however this is when the split happens, Laurence splits the Church into three groups.
The Choir - Conducting experiments with Old Blood. Heavily inspired by Provost Willem this is where they looked to elevate their thoughts and make contact with the Great Ones. They took after the work started in Byrgenworth and found a lost Great One or maybe one that never wanted to leave, either way this ones name was Ebrietas, the Daughter of the Cosmos. This is the great one that seems to elevate the thoughts of Rom -a loyal companion of Willem- however, she became what keeps the nightmare world and the normal world separate. Killing her is a sin of the highest caliber don't kill Rom, the Vacuous Spider.
The School of Mensis - The School of Mensis is the second sub-section of the Healing Church that was given power by The Choir in order to conduct experiments in Yahar'gul, the Unseen Village. These guys and gals blended in to the night and made sure Yharnamites were far away from Yahar'gul. The experiments they were conducting were too horrific to be seen by normal people. They sent out Hunters that no longer answered to the Healing Church but the School of Mensis that seems to drift away from the Church's influence. However, there were hunters that did answer to the Healing Church directly, but led by The First Hunter.
The Workshop - The Workshop were hunters that would hunt in Yharnam killing all signs of the Beastly Scourge while blending into the night to remain a secret, also to keep information of the Scourge from getting out there. This sub-section was led by the Gehrman, the First Hunter all operations were carried out by him and his team of hunters. Using a form of fighting known as Quickening.
However, the secret of beastly scourges slipped out in a place now known as Old Yharnam where Ashen Blood was the medicine of choice. Ashen Blood causes the initial breakout of beasts, Old Blood temporarily cures it due to the plagued blood they had. Needless to say, Old Yharnam couldn't be saved the only thing left for that place was fire. For it was burned to cinders for how widely the scourge was triggered by the Ashen Blood. So after everything gets into place and the stage is set for our night on the hunt. We are the highly charismatic Standard McDefault and must sign a blood contract to help us survive the hunt however there's a note in a chair hastily written saying "Seek Paleblood to Transcend the Hunt." This was a note from us and the opening cutscene is a literal showcase of the beastly scourge being burned out of our system. Then we see a reference to Berserk so 10/10 dThus starts you playing the game.
Final Thoughts
I would never spoil a game I hold in high regard, buy it and play it or else I'll kill you. Don't think "Haha, he's being-" No. I'm dead serious, you play Bloodborne or you die. Joking aside. Solid game for me, would recommend to all players who need a good adventure, it'll hold you over for weeks man especially if you try to platinum it and 100% all the DLC trophies. I love this game so much and I can't imagine my life without it, it'd probably just consist of Final Faggotry and Kingdom Farts. Thanks for the time, sorry to spam, but if I can't take enough time to do them in video format might as well do it here. THANKS!!! ^_^
